My Mother's Clothes

My Mother's Clothes

2023

This is a self portrait that explores my relationship to my mother, Christianity and agency. The painting depicts a figure in the foreground wearing Yoruba cultural attire that is obviously too big for her frame. In the background is a painting of Mary and Jesus hung on the wall, common in devout Catholic homes, and the front door.

My mother recently gave me these clothes. They were sewn to commemorate her father’s death. She gave them to me because they had become too small for her, but she wanted to keep the fabric in the family. They do not fit me. This painting is a record of objects, ideas and concepts that no longer fit me.
